When one door closes, do not just look for another door—take that door off its hinges and use it to build your new opportunity. |
That is exactly what Don Berry did in 1987. The downturn in the oil industry in Colorado created a lot of loss for structural engineering firms. Don was working for one such firm at the time when he decided to strike out on his own to forge a new path. He took an old door and a set of saw horses and set up a make-shift desk in his dining room.
Don had a vision for what he wanted his new company to be. He knew he wanted to provide outstanding service while also making Peak a desirable place to work. The employees he would add over the years were not just workers and colleagues, they were family to Don. Family came first. Don’s vision was a firm that supported its employees in all of their work and personal goals.
From that humble beginning, Peak Engineering has grown and flourished over the years. After 30 years in the structural consulting business, Peak is an industry leader in the design of commercial real estate. Don sold his controlling interest in 2008 but he remained active in the firm until 2015. The owners of Peak have worked hard to continue Don’s vision. Family is the core of our company.

Don was well known throughout the Denver engineering and construction community. He never met a stranger in all his years. His knowledge and skill base as a consulting structural engineer was highly regarded. His skills as an engineer were almost as legendary as his ability to tell a tale. The stories he told about his life-long experiences in the construction industry would have filled a best-selling novel. Don always had an open door and went out of his way to share his experience with Peak’s employees. Peak was built on that knowledge base and over the years we have continued to learn from Don. The current ownership group has over 75 years of combined experience. Just like Don did, we use that knowledge to teach and guide our employees.
Don made sure that Peak hired quality people and always provided quality service. While Don’s presence and guidance are missed, Peak strives to continue to follow his lead. Peak focuses on finding the right talent to share the company goals and vision. Peak always put the client’s needs first. Don would not have wanted it any other way.
